(For Maintenance Mechanic)

The test for maintenance mechanic consists of two Parts: Part I, a multiple-choice test dealing with basic mechanics, electricity, and electronics and with the use of hand and portable power tools and test equipment; and Part II, a multiple-choice test dealing with basic mathematical computations, reading comprehension, and how to following verbal instructions.

As an applicant, you must have knowledge of basic mechanics, basic electricity, basic electronics, safety procedures, and equipment; you must know how to perform basic and complex mathematical computations, apply theory, detect patterns, use reference materials, communicate orally and in writing, use hand and power tools, use shop power equipment, and use technical drawings and test equipment.

If you are hired, you’ll perform preventive maintenance and repair work at journeyman level on the mechanical electrical, electronic, pneumatic, or hydraulic controls and on the operating mechanisms of mail processing equipment.

Ability to detect patterns refers to the ability to observe and analyze qualitative and quantitative factors such as number progressions, spatial relationships, and auditory and visual patterns. This includes combining information and determining how a given set of numbers, objects, or sounds are related to each other. Solve each problem below and mark the correct answer on the sample answer sheet on the next page.

1) Select from the drawings of objects labeled A, B, C, and D the one that would have the top, front, and right views shown in the drawings at the left.

2) In the problem below there is at the left a drawing of a flat piece of paper and at the right four figures labeled A, B, C, and D. When the paper is bent on the dotted lines, it will form one of the figures at the right. Decide which figure can be formed from the flat piece.
